Be a kind a courteous visitor

We love to share our beautiful Durango with the thousands of folks that visit us each year. We take pride in our clean and healthful environment and we encourage travelers to help keep Durango clean and green!

Durango is famous for cycling - mountain biking and road bikes. Please keep an eye out for bikers and safely share the road as some of the more popular riding areas do have narrow shoulders. You must leave at least 3 feet between you and the bike and pass with caution.

We lost some of our beautiful lands to wildfires recently. It has deeply affected us all. We ask you to PLEASE not toss cigarettes and butts out your car window or on to our streets. Please dispose of all butts in ashtrays or safely in a trash can.

Reminder - you are on vacation...slow down and enjoy!

TAKE CARE OF YOUR PUBLIC LANDS

Leave no trace of your visit to the back country.

Be a respectful and polite visitor.

  • Although Southwest Colorado may look lush and green, it's often dangerously dry in summer. Check fire conditions before heading out.
  • If you want to cook out, bring a campstove. Building campfires scars scenery, sterilizes soil, depletes wood sources and causes fire danger.
  • Pack out everything you pack in. That means all trash - even soiled tissues. Bury human waste away from water sources. Don't wash or camp right beside rivers, streams or creeks.
  • Don't take artifacts from historical mining structures or archeological sites. It's against federal law and can be dangerous. Many old structures are unstable, and mine shafts can contain poisonous gases.
  • Resist the urge to pick wildflowers. Leave then for others to enjoy. Keep pets under control and with you. Don't harass wildlife or livestock, for your safety as well as theirs.
  • Stay on the trail to reduce the impact you and scores of others have on the delicate backcountry. Cutting switchbacks causes erosion.
