ACCESS: Turn west off Main Avenue in Durango onto 32nd Street. Turn north on W. 4th Ave. Go a couple of blocks to where the road appears to end. turn right, disregarding "1-way no enter" signs. Continue about a block to the signed trailhead parking area.

DIRECTIONS: The trial follows switchbacks up to the saddle overlooking town, then continues north up the tilted mesa. Motorized vehicles are not allowed. White arrows on trail markers indicate hiking/horseback route; blue arrows indicate mountain bike route. The left branch of the old road climbs up the middle of the mesa top to the north rim, where a section of trail connects over to the road running down the east side. This segment rejoins the road going up the middle. The trail winds through pinion, juniper and ponderosa pine stands with views of Falls Creek, Animas Valley and West Needles.
