Durango Skiing and Snowboarding - Durango Mountain Resort

Chapman Hill Ski Area:
This youth-oriented recreation facility has a ski slope for beginners, a sledding hill and anice skating rink. It is located on a north-facing hillside of the Fort Lewis College mesa. The base area is located off Florida Road just north of downtown. While the ski area focuses on beginning ski lessons for youth it has both big and small tow ropes to accommodate people of all sizes. Race leagues for youth and adult skiers are offered every year. Season passes and lessons are offered at modest prices and open skiing is available evenings and weekends. A snack bar and warming house are on site.

Hesperus Ski Area
Hesperus Ski Area is a small, friendly, inexpensive place to ski day and night. It is 75 acres of skiable terrain featuring a 700 foot vertical drop. It is served by one double chairlift. The area is located at Hesperus, Colorado which is 12 miles west of Durango on HWY 160, 26 miles from Cortez and 32 miles from Farmington, NM via the La Plata Highway.

The hill has nine alpine runs and 90% of the terrain is lighted until 9:30 - including a lighted snowboard park.

A beginner's area is serviced by a rope tow. Both group and private lessons in downhill, telemark and snowboarding are available for all levels of abilities. Hesperus features unpacked powder for telemarkers and snowborders. The Ski Hut serves homemade food. For more information call (970) 259-3711.

Telluride Ski Resort
Telluride Ski Resort has three distinct areas tailored for various skier levels. More than 1,050 acres of terrain unroll onto three interconnected mountain faces providing varying degrees of difficulty.

The broad gentle runs of the Meadows are suited for beginners and novice skiers to build confidence on long runs. Behind the ridge from the resort's Front Face in the Gorrono Basin and the Palnyra Bowl areas lie four lifts and 21 groomed cruising trails that make about half of Telluride's terrain. More intermediate runs are located on the Front Ridge, including See Forever, the resort's longest run at 2.85 miles.

Telluride has ultimate ski runs. There is The Face which provides steep pitches, tree skiing and big bumps for expert skiers on the Plunge to Spiral Stairs, which dips 3,165 feet to the town below. The ultimate thrill of Gold Hill (double black diamonds) can be eached by hiking from the top of Chair 6.
