Elk Hunting in Durango Colorado

Due to excellent habitat, Southwest Colorado offers some of the best big game hunting for Elk and Deer in the United States. The Colorado Division of Wildlife has taken stringent measures to enhance and protect good habitat in Southwest Colorado. This is the primary reason why the elk herd is so healthy. Colorado offers excellent opportunities to hunt big game in the muzzle loading seasons, archery seasons and the regular rifle seasons. Colorado still offers hunting licenses for elk to non-residents that can be purchased without entering a limited license lottery drawing for the second through fourth seasons.

Except for some hunting areas, only the first elk rifle season requires a lottery for limited licenses.
