I paint on an intuitive level, out of my own experiences. The figures sometimes are the environment and other times are placed in familiar environments. Not an environment recognizable as a particular place but as a space- emotional or otherwise- we may have all explored. I use the figure, somewhat a self-portrait but more a representation of human experience, to tell stories. Again, not a particular story, but one that fits into others, altered by individual experiences.

These paintings are oil washes on paper. I use multiple layers of analogous colors to either give depth or to flatten these largely monochromatic works. Some have charcoal drawing layered over the wash - also indicative of the many surfaces in a story.

I studied at Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana and received a BA in Art. It was there that my love of the figure as a subject was cultivated. I moved to Alamosa, Colorado and spent 3 years working with the artists of the San Luis Valley and developing my own work, then primarily watercolor. Patchwork Central, an inner-city community in Evansville, Indiana, invited me to come work with them as an artist-in-residence. It was there that the brilliant reds and yellows came to cover my pallette, and the move oil on paper was made. After 3 years, my love of the sky returned me to Colorado where I have set up my studio in Durango.
