DURANGO, Colo. – Trails 2000, the “Friends of the Durango Mountain Park” and the City of Durango are teaming up for a celebration of trails and land stewardship with a trail work event held on National Public Lands Day, Sat., Sept. 27.

The event will celebrate the efforts of the Durango Mountain Park stakeholder’s group. The “Friends” was formed by the City to analyze the Park and its needs, including honoring the conservation easement held by the La Plata Open Space Conservancy, which balances wildlife needs and recreational uses.

The property now known as Durango Mountain Park, was threatened with development in the early 1990s. Trails 2000 and its members, working closely with the City of Durango and the La Plata Open Space Conservancy, stepped forward with funding to help begin the process of preserving the park, now nearly 300 acres in size.

All are invited to participate in the National Public Lands Day event, helping with trail work, trash cleanup and various jobs suited to any age. Meet at the Leyden Street trailhead at 9 a.m. Work will continue until noon, followed by a barbeque sponsored by Trails 2000 and the “Friends.” For further information or for directions, visit www.trails2000.org or call 970.259.4682.

Trails 2000, founded in 1989, brings the Durango community together to build and maintain trails, donating more than 3,000 hours annually on Forest Service, BLM, County, City and private land.
