There are some slots available in race categories. There is not a waiting list and entries are NOT transferable. The tour/race is capped at 2,500 total cyclists on the road, for safety and logistical capacity of law enforcement, volunteers and staffing of the event. Other cycling activities planned for the weekend-the criterum, the east Animas time trail have space available. There will also be plenty of room at the concert. The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic has an estimated economic impact to the community of $1,125,000. In addition to the economic benefits, the committee has donated thousand of dollars back to projects. This year the primary beneficiary is the breast care center at Mercy Regional Medical Center. The bike race has supported Mercy Health Foundation–Heart Fund, American Heart Association, Trails 2000, Safe Road Coalition, Fort Lewis College Cycling Team, and Durango DEVO to name a few. The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic was started in 1972 as part of a tourism promotion for Durango. An event unique in the cycling world, the Iron Horse features a 47- mile road race, and 52- mile road tour on the scenic and mountainous Highway 550. This unique race is against an authentic steam powered train, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge, ultimately finishing in the mining town of Silverton. Highway 550 north, known as the million dollar highway, is closed to all vehicular traffic through a special permit from the Colorado State Patrol. The professional cyclists can get to Silverton in just over 2 hours; many tour riders complete the ride in 4 hours or more. Gaige Sippy-Event Director 970-259-4621.
