The San Juan Symphony will finish the 2007-08 “Song and Dance” season by welcoming Israeli cellist Inbal Segev to the Four Corners with the brimming energy of Haydn and the poignant Yiddish melodies of Schindler’s List.  The whole San Juan Symphony orchestra pulls out all the stops with exhilarating Czech and Russian showpieces in  Symphonic Dances.   The concerts will be presented on Sat. April 19 at 7:30 pm at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO and Sun., April 20 at 3 pm at Henderson Performance Hall at San Juan College in Farmington, NM.

Inbal Segev is quickly establishing herself as one of the most sought-after young cellists today.  Following debuts with the Israel Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, Ms. Segev has enjoyed an international career. In Europe, she has played with the Helsinki Philharmonic, Radio Symphony of Helsinki, Reutlingen Symphony, Dortmund Philharmonic, and the Orchestre National de Lyon. In the Far East, she has played with the Bangkok Symphony, and in Japan in multiple engagements with the New York Symphonic Ensemble. In addition, Ms. Segev has performed with all the major orchestras in Israel, her native country.

The first half of the concert will feature Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, Op. 46, Haydn’s Cello Concerto Nr. 1 in C major, and Williams’ Theme from Schindler’s List.  The second half will feature Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, Op.45.  Rachmaninoff’s last completed work, the Symphonic Dances, was written on Long Island, New York, in 1940, during a period of rest and recuperation from touring. The Symphonic Dances are dedicated to conductor Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and they served as a showpiece for one of the great virtuoso orchestras of the time. They are a masterpiece of symphonic orchestration, making effective use of alto saxophone, harp, piano, and a large percussion section.

Music Director Arthur Post will give a pre-concert talk as part of the series Wednesdays at 6 – Musically Speaking at the Henry Strater Theatre in the Strater Hotel at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16.  The public is invited to attend.
