New Fort Lewis College student union building plan approved

DURANGO, Colo. - The Board of Trustees for Fort Lewis College have approved a alternate vision for the new $37.5 million student union building.

Plans are now to build a 43,000 - 46,000 sq. foot addition onto the southwest corner of the existing College Union Building (CUB), and completely renovate the existing CUB to create an approximately 111,000 sq. foot student union building.

The decision to renovate the existing CUB instead of constructing a completely new building represents a more environmentally-friendly option, according to a news release. This new plan will also create a facility that is larger than the original building design, which was to have been an approximately 103,000 sq. foot building in the center of campus. This plan reportedly fell out of favor after it was discovered that costs would have been significantly more than the anticipated budget.

The Board of Trustees considered several building plans and locations, but chose to move forward with the addition and renovation option. This option will require no additional costs to students. The students had previously approved a student fee to help pay for a student union building, though no design consideration had yet been initiated.

“Our renovation of the CUB will provide a vibrant, contemporary space for our students while providing a regional model of sustainability by re-using our classic building alongside a new addition,” said Board of Trustees Chairman Tom Schilling.

Many of the organizations in the current CUB will find a home in the new student union. Some of the new features planned include, the Rocket Grille and Pub,  movie theater,  coffee shop,  roof deck,  convenience store, and  enhanced meeting facilities that will be open to both the College and the surrounding community.

The College administration plans to immediately begin meeting with students to secure further input and direction into the students’ wishes for the new student union building. Additional student meetings are planned once classes resume in the fall.
