New floodplain mapping for Vallecito and Grimes Creeks to be presented July 1

Home

DURANGO, Colo. The La Plata County Engineering and Building Departments will host a community meeting at the Vallecito Community Center, 7252 County Road 501, July 1, 2008, at 7 p.m. to present new floodplain mapping for Vallecito and Grimes Creeks.

Representatives from La Plata County and Anderson Consulting Engineers will make presentations and answer questions regarding the mapping project, development of Federal Emergency Management Agency Regulations (FEMA) flood insurance rate maps and floodplain regulations. Interested property owners along Vallecito and Grimes Creek will be able to view the new floodplain mapping that more accurately delineates floodplain and floodway areas for those creeks north of Vallecito Reservoir.

La Plata County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and is obligated to enforce floodplain regulations in accordance with FEMA. By participating in the NFIP, flood insurance is made available to all property owners in La Plata County.  Floodplain mapping is used by insurance companies to determine flood zones and rates for flood insurance. New technology and aerial mapping processes have created better accuracy in determining the limits and depths of flood waters in the study area.

The 2007 Vallecito Flood Plain Study results show various changes to the floodplain boundaries that were established in the late 1970s. The new mapping for floodplain and floodway will affect a number of properties in the Valley. Some properties will be included in the floodplain and floodway delineation that weren’t previously included; other properties that were in the floodplain and floodway may now be excluded.

Property owners within the Vallecito Valley are encouraged to participate in the public meeting, review the new mapping, and learn how the floodplain regulations will affect properties in the floodplain.
