Middle ground between environmentalists and new ranchers to be explored at Maria’s Bookshop

DURANGO, Colo. - Courtney White will be reading from and signing copies of his work Revolution on the Range: The Rise of a New Ranch in the American West at Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Avenue in Durango, on Mon., Aug. 18, 6:30 to 7:30 pm.

Reflecting on current events and environmental issues, from oil and global warming to sprawling development, White tells a story from the American West, where cowboys and environmentalists—two sides seemingly fated to fight—cross enemy lines to work together and save the land they love.

Promoted as a lesson for anyone who hopes to truly solve environmental problems, Revolution on the Range: The Rise of a New Ranch in the American West demonstrates that the real conflict in the West isn’t over ethics, but approaches.

“Community is the most important solution to the environmental crisis we face. But community has got to be more than a feel-good buzzword. When it works, it's the result of hard work and real attempts at understanding. This fine volume is a handbook for that kind of work,” noted Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy.

Wrote James Howard Kunstler, author of Long Emergency, "The American public is woefully unprepared for the changes we face in every particular of daily life, including the way we get our food and the way we inhabit the landscape. Courtney White's vision is an eloquent introduction to what the future will require of us."

White is co-founder and executive director of The Quivira Coalition, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building bridges between ranchers, conservationists, public land managers, scientists, and others. A former archaeologist and Sierra Club activist, White now devotes himself to land restoration.
