DURANGO, Colo.Durango is world-renown as the home of two classic “Iron Horses” - the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic – but a third is joining the mix:  The Durango Iron Horse Chef

The Durango Iron Horse Chef competition is set for Aug. 23 at the Durango Farmers Market, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Four local chefs will shop and purchase food from local grower-vendors at the Market, and then prepare a meal on site. This community event is designed to highlight the local harvests and Durango’s talented chefs.

“Downtown Durango restaurant owners and chefs have supported the ‘locavore’ concept and many were eager to participate in this event,” said Julie Hudak of Healthy Lifestyles La Plata.

Chefs competing are Chris Crowl of Cosmopolitan, Will Nolan of The Palace, Dave Cuntz of Mahogany Grill and Dave Stewart of Seasons Rotisserie Grill. The winning chef will be recognized with a personalized Durango Iron Horse Chef Competition Jacket.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with Mike Smedley offering commentary throughout the morning as the chefs prepare their entries. Each chef begins with locally-raised meat (goat, lamb, beef or pork) and is allowed 1.5 hours to shop the market for additional ingredients before preparing their meals.

Judges for this year’s event include Joelle Riddle, County Commissioner; Michael Rendon, City Councilor; Moni Helling, First National Bank of Durango; plus one market shopper who will be selected from a drawing on Aug. 16. Meals will be judged on taste, creativity, presentation and originality in use of market products.

The Durango Iron Horse Chef is presented by the Colorado State University Extension, Healthy Lifestyles La Plata and La Plata County in cooperation with the Durango Farmers Market, located in the parking lot of First National Bank of Durango, on the corner of 8th and Main Avenue.
