The La Plata County Board of County Commissioners would like to express their gratitude for the cooperative effort put forth in combating the fire that occurred on Friday, February 22, 2008 and destroyed Seasons Rotisserie & Grill, Half-Price Tees and Le Rendezvous Swiss Bakery, located in the 700 block of Main Avenue in Durango.  “Our hearts go out to the business owners, employees, and property owners whose lives were drastically changed by the fire,” expressed Commissioner Wally White.

The Commissioners are proud of the teamwork and organization of the many fire districts, local government departments, law enforcement agencies and volunteer groups.  Friday’s incident demonstrated, once again, that emergency planning and exercise programs reinforcing collaboration between multiple jurisdictions, first responders, and private industry have created an effective response structure for our community.

The Commissioners are particularly appreciative of the firefighters of Durango Fire & Rescue Authority, Upper Pine River Fire Protection District, Los Pinos Fire Protection District and Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District who worked valiantly to keep the fire contained.  “We extend our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery for the nine firefighters who were injured in the line of duty,” said Commissioner Kellie Hotter.

The Commissioners would also like to recognize the coordination of relief efforts of the Durango Business Improvement District (www.downtowndurango.org), as well as all the citizens and businesses in Durango who are raising funds to help those affected by the fire.  “It is heartwarming to see how the citizens of La Plata County join together and help each other in times of need.  We truly live in a wonderful community,” said Commission Chair Joelle Riddle.
