Cleveland Pops conductor Carl Topilow to lead two Music in the Mountains Pops concerts

DURANGO, Colo. – Cleveland Pops Orchestra founder and conductor Carl Topilow will lead the Festival Orchestra in two Pops concerts during the Festival’s 2008 season.  “Pops Goes to the Movies” will feature themes from “Silverado,” “The Terminal” and “Psycho” as well as music from “Chicago,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “The Godfather.”

Topilow is renowned for his versatile musicianship, whether with his conductor’s baton or his trademark red clarinet. His pops performances blend light classical, swing, jazz, Broadway, Dixieland and Klezmer music, a unique musical form derived from Jewish troubadours in Eastern Europe. His signature approach to pops programming includes audience involvement and true showmanship. He recently opened the Cleveland Pops 2007-08 with a program featuring sports and music on the night the Cleveland Indians headed to the American League Championship Series. The audience was invited to join in on “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

Now in its 12th season, Topilow’s Cleveland Pops plays to large audiences in Severance Hall and other Ohio venues. His 60-member ensemble has established itself as a champion of beloved American music as he mixes traditional styles with newer ones without leaning toward the edgy side of popular music. Unlike some pops orchestras, which mix classical and popular fare, Topilow largely sticks to Broadway, Hollywood, jazz and other light-hearted repertoire created in the United States.

In addition to his role as Cleveland Pops conductor, Topilow is in his 27th year as conductor of the Cleveland Institute of Music. Last summer he also celebrated his 30th anniversary as music director and conductor of the National Repertory Orchestra, a summer music festival based in Breckenridge, Colo.

Topilow takes the podium in Pops Night concerts at BootJack Ranch near Pagosa Springs July 25 and at the Purgatory Village Tent near Durango July 26.  For further information, visit musicinthemountains.com.
