Spring has sprung, and with it comes spring clean-up!  City residents are encouraged to finish their spring clean-up in time for the City's annual yard waste pick up.  Crews will be moving through the residential neighborhoods, picking up bagged or boxed brush, yard waste, and tree limbs less than eight feet in length.  Tree limbs longer than eight feet will not be collected.  Residents are asked to place materials in the alley for collection, or at curbside in areas where there are no alleys.  To help the City crews, residents are also asked to place the material at least two feet from fences, trees, bushes, gas meters, fire hydrants, power poles, etc. and to be careful not to block driving lanes or sidewalks.

Residents may set their yard waste out for collection up to one week before their area is scheduled for collection.  The schedule for pick-up is as follows:

·        April 14-18: Areas south of 15th Street, east to 9th Avenue and residential areas of Highway 160W within the City limits.

·        April 21-25: Areas north of 15th Street to the north city limits east and west of Main, including the Animas City area.

·        April 28 - May 2: Areas to the west, including Crestview, Needham, Rockridge and Junction Street areas.

·        May 5-9: Riverview, North College, Hillcrest and Skyridge areas.

The City's spring clean-up program offers residents an opportunity to discard yard waste at no charge.  The "brown" waste will be taken to the recycling center for mulching, keeping it out of the landfills.  The mulch is then used in City parks and is available to the public. The City offers three types of mulch for sale: the "brown" mulch, made up of collected yard waste; a glass mulch, made from 3/8" tumbled recycled glass (similar in size to pea gravel); and a sand/glass mixture made up of smaller bits of pulverized glass in a sand base.  All three types of mulch are $10.00 per cubic yard and available for purchase at River City Hall.

Residents may also haul rubbish to the Durango Solid Waste Transfer Station at 750 Tech Center Drive (385-7093) or the Bondad Landfill at 1500 E County Road 318 (247-0646), however they will be charged according to the volume of waste delivered.

For more questions about the spring clean-up program or the availability of mulch, please contact the Public Works Department at 375-4800.
